Shitty day today. Our dog got attacked yesterday afternoon. She suffered a couple of sincere puncture wounds & is sleeping off the sedation.

@feoh I remember my high school collecting info for this project (a lot of schools across Britain did so)

What a thoroughly delightful rabbit hole!

TIL that the BBC and Acorn, back in the day, created "The Domesday Project" a multimedia commemoration of the publication of the original "Domesday Book".

A bunch of folks are working to preserve it and bring it forward to modern hardware on the Internet Archive: domesday86.com/

Yet another great group of folks fighting to preserve digital culture. LOVE THIS! :)

Hard for me to remember that there WAS in fact a time when people would routinely put their phone numbers and other PII in E-mail/Usenet signatures.

And nobody took advantage of it! :)

To all the new users:

Mastodon is like Twitter, but without the crappy attitudes, crappy algorithms and bad manners.

Here you work harder to find peeps, but once you do, it's an amazing place to be and interact with. #twitter #mastodon #fosstodon

My internal monologue today:

Ego: You are lucky to have this job. Now suck it up and GET MOTIVATED!

Id: Fuck you want to be playing No Man's Sky.

SuperEgo: I know, let's spin our wheels on work but not actually pay enough attention to be fully productive!

The Sushen were a people that inhabited an area likely somewhere in what is now northeastern China (Manchuria), Russian far-east, and Korea. Their unique arrows traced a section of the falcon's migration paths over central China. As we know now, their seasonal migration can reach all the way to sub-Saharan Africa.

RT @culturaltutor
Istanbul's Basilica Cistern is one of the most extraordinary places on earth.

This underground chamber was built in the 6th century from over 300 columns taken from other, demolished buildings.

And it is therefore the best example of a now forgotten process called spoliation...

If you're posting a public post on the Fediverse, it will be visible to anyone, even people who aren't on the Fediverse. Every account has a public profile page, which lists all the public posts made by that account.

If you want to keep your Fedi posts off search engines, the best way to do this is to use a non-public visibility setting such as followers-only or mentioned/direct. Search engines cannot see posts with such visibility settings.

On Mastodon, you can also go to Preferences > Other > Opt Out Of Search Engine Indexing, tick the box then click Save Changes. In theory this setting also stops your public posts from ending up in search engines, but in reality it's up to search engines whether they respect your request.

PixelFed has a similar option in Settings > Privacy.

Lwaxana doesn't like it when a device like a Bluetooth speaker speaks to indicate its status

She doesn't like it one bit

She will look at it and do one under-her-breath "woof" and then back off suspiciously

@feoh Yes. But that's a psychological effect and not technical reasoning. Whatever we're used to do on a daily basis defines how our brain likes to work. That changes and that can be changed. Habit it not always an indicator of what's best.

I can't move to the Fediverse properly until I reproduce my famous pinned post from the birdsite, so here it is:

P.S.A. To all vintage computer and video game collectors:

Go through your collections and GET THE DAMN BATTERIES OUT!

Now! Don't wait! Seriously, put down the phone, go to your collection and take out all the batteries. Right now! Even if they look "okay" they are NOT SAFE after this much time.

Ok, I now have permission to talk about this project in full and in public. I'm working with Alan Kay to build six replicas* of a Xerox PARC Alto display for use in a museum exhibit**. Visitors will see a real Alto and then walk over to one of the replicas to futz with Smalltalk '78***.
Here's a nice writeup of a different project that rejuvenated an actual Alto.

I have an observation that’s based mostly on anecdata, but still here it is: Twitter users tend to treat the service, like a blog, spewing their tweets and opinions out into the ether. Here, people actually engage in meaningful conversation, and I absolutely love that!
